The round table “Manurqa: daily lives, territory and materialities of the medieval Islamic communities in Menorca” begins at Can Saura

The event is sponsored by the Consell Insular de Menorca and will continue tomorrow, Saturday 12 July

This Friday marked the beginning of the round table “Manurqa: daily lives, territory and materialities of the medieval Islamic communities in Menorca” at Can Saura in Ciutadella. This scientific event, organised by Amalia Pérez-Juez and Octavio Torres Gomariz, brings together researchers from various fields of archaeology to reflect collectively on the latest developments in the study of this historical period on the island.

The opening session was attended by the Island Director of Culture and Vice President of the Talayotic Menorca Agency, Jaime Reurer, as well as María José León Moll, Director of Can Saura.

This first day unfolded throughout the day and included a guided visit to key locations in Ciutadella’s historic centre linked to the city’s Islamic past, offering a contextual and heritage-based immersion into Andalusi Menorca.

The round table, sponsored by the Consell Insular de Menorca, will continue tomorrow, Saturday 12 July, at the Museum of Menorca in Maó, where, in addition to various lectures and debates, a guided tour of the Andalusi collection is scheduled. The event will conclude with a visit to the Torre d’en Galmés archaeological site, where the main findings from the excavation of the Islamic alquería at this emblematic site will be presented.

With an interdisciplinary approach, “Manurqa: daily lives, territory and materialities of the medieval Islamic communities in Menorca” is structured around various thematic blocks aimed at addressing the key historical issues surrounding Islamic Menorca from different perspectives, encouraging debate and collaboration among specialists.
